Google Digital Garage Edinburgh

Twenty years ago today a small company started with the idea of organising “The world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful”.

They had no idea that when they began they would come to be one of the biggest companies in the world and one of the most powerful the planet has ever seen. From their original idea they have moved into maps, web browsing, phones, tablets and just about everything in between.

Now Google is offering free digital marketing course in Edinburgh – to make sure your business is making use of every part of the online world through the Digital Garage lessons in Scotland’s capital.

Ruth Davidson, Edinburgh Centre MSP and Leader of the Scottish Conservative Party, is opening the Google Digital Garage, where expert coaches will work to deliver Google’s goal of helping 100,000 people in the UK find a job or grow in their career through digital skills training over three years.

The lessons run from getting started with Google Ads, Google Analytics, social media, building an online shop and how to connect with your customers through email.

Each of the subjects is broken down into different sections meaning you can take the learning at your own pace. But once you have completed the full series then you will have earned yourself the Digital Garage Certificate of Online Proficiency in Edinburgh.

Research shows that 90% of new jobs in the UK require digital literacy, yet according to the Digital Economy Business Survey , just one in four businesses in Scotland feel their employees have the skills to meet their digital needs and two in five Scottish employers have vacancies in tech roles.

Scotland’s Digital Technology Report shows that three in 10 Scottish businesses sell goods or services online, proving an opportunity for local business to make more of the fast-growing digital world and become more visible to target markets.

The Google Digital Garage has already trained 250,000 people across the UK, helping tens of thousands people find a job or grow their career, and supporting thousands of businesses to grow.

Launching the event today, Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson said: “Too many people still see technology as something beyond their reach – like learning a foreign language or mastering a musical instrument. But in truth, with support it can be picked up and improved upon very quickly.

Tech and the digital economy is going to be vital if we are going to achieve economic growth in Scotland over the coming years.

Anyone can pop in or register online to take part in free coaching at g.co/scotlandgarage.

Introducing the Mobile Sites certification, for web developers

Mobile now devices for over half of all web traffic, making performance on small screens more important than ever.

Despite this increase, a recent study by Google found that the average time it takes to load a mobile landing page is 22 seconds. When you consider that 53% of mobile site visitors will leave a site if it takes more than three seconds to load, it’s clear why conversion rates are consistently lower on mobile than desktop.

Website visitors now expect their mobile experience to be as flawless as desktop, and the majority of online businesses are failing to deliver.

With this in mind, we’re introducing the new Google Mobile Sites certification. Passing the Mobile Sites exam signals that you have a demonstrated ability to build and optimize high-quality sites, and allows you to promote yourself as a Google accredited mobile site developer.

Through codifying best practice in mobile site development, we hope to improve the general standard of mobile design and speed, and make it easier to find the best talent.

What the exam covers?

To pass the exam, you’ll need to show proficiency across mobile site design, mobile UX best practice, mobile site speed optimization, and advanced web technologies. We’ve put together a study guide that covers everything you’ll need to know.

What are the benefits?

We know that a lot of web developers are doing great work on mobile sites – this certification is a way of promoting them to a wider audience. Being certified means being recognized by Google as an expert in mobile site optimization, which will make you more accessible and attractive to potential clients looking for a good match for those services.

The certification will display on your Partners profile, helping you stand out to businesses looking for mobile site development, and can also be shared across social media.

How to sign up

Are you living in Scotland? Check out GDG Edinburgh on meetup to get started. To take the exam, please click on the Mobile Sites certification link and log in to your Google Partners account.

The exam is open to all web developers globally in English and, once completed, the certification will remain valid for 12 months.
